The San Diego Air & Space Museum administers several competitive scholarships for San Diego County graduating seniors planning to attend college. The Bill Gibbs and R. A. Rearwin scholarships are for students with strong aviation/aerospace career interests who are pursuing a degree in math, physics, science, or engineering. The Convair Alumni Association Scholarship Fund is for direct descendants (natural or adopted) of former San Diego area employees of Consolidated Aircraft Corporation, Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, or General Dynamics Corporation. Bill Gibbs Endowment Fund

Organization Information

The International Aerospace Hall of Fame (IAHF) Grant Fund Endowment was established by the Board of Directors of the IAHF in 1988 with funds provided by Mr. Bill Gibbs for the purpose of providing scholarship/research assistance to individuals who are in the process of pursuing a career in aviation/aerospace related subjects. In 1990 the Aerospace Hall of Fame Grant Fund Endowment was changed to the Bill Gibbs Endowment Fund. On April 1, 1993 the IAHF merged with the San Diego Aerospace Museum (SDAM) and SDAM assumed fiscal and program oversight responsibility for the Fund.

Eligibility Factors and Limitations:

Graduating seniors of San Diego County high schools who will be attending a four year college.

Basis of Selection:

  • Academic achievement.
  • Strong aviation/aerospace career interests.
  • Pursuing a degree in math, physics, science, or engineering.

Application Procedure:

Interested students must write directly to the San Diego Air & Space Museum (Attn. Education Office) requesting application for scholarship. Completed applications must then be sent directly to the museum at the address listed above, and postmarked not later than April 1. Eligible applicants will be interviewed. Convair Alumni Association Scholarship Fund

Organization Information

The Convair Alumni Association Scholarship Fund (CAASF) was established by the Board of Directors of the Convair Alumni Association in 1993 with funds provided by the Convair Recreation Association and the General Dynamics Corporation for the express purpose of providing higher education opportunities for eligible candidates. The funds supporting the CAASF are held and administered by the San Diego Air & Space Museum for the express purpose of providing annual scholarships to eligible candidates.

Eligibility Factors and Limitations:

Graduating seniors of San Diego County high schools who will be attending a four year college.

Direct descendants (natural or adopted) of former employees of Consolidated Aircraft Corporation (1935-1943), or Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation (1943-1954), or General Dynamics Corporation (1954-1997) and who worked in the San Diego area.

Basis of Selection:

  • Academic achievement.
  • Community service
  • Leadership potential

R. A. Rearwin Scholarship Fund

Organization Information

The scholarship was established by Kenneth Rearwin and other members of the Rearwin family in honor of their late father, aircraft and engine manufacturer R. A. Rearwin. The scholarship provides funds for individuals who have demonstrated a strong career interest in the aerospace industry and are in the process of pursuing a baccalaureate degree in an aerospace-related field. The fund is managed by the San Diego Air & Space Museum, of which Kenneth Rearwin was a member of the Board of Directors.

Eligibility Factors and Limitations:

Graduating seniors of San Diego County high schools who will be attending a four year college.

Basis of Selection:

  • Unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Strong aviation/aerospace career interests
  • Pursuing a baccalaureate degree in an aerospace-related field

Gillespie Field Eagles - The Gillespie Field Eagles is a flight training scholarship for High School Students in San Diego County. They have four scholarships each quarter and provide flight training for $30 per flight including airplane and instructor. Students must write an essay on "Why I want to be a pilot."
