Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers working on a plane

Visitors often ask where the Aerospace Museum acquired it's extensive and varied collection of aircraft. The answer is that the museum's collection of planes, engines and artifacts came from many sources. Some were purchased, others donated and a few planes were bartered. Regardless of how they join the collection, many airplanes and engines received by the museum require extensive work.

This work is needed either to restore them to their original operational condition or to improve them to a suitable condition for display. Of the aircraft presently in the museum's inventory, 25 percent were either "scratch built" or painstakingly restored by the museum's restoration volunteers. Thus, the restoration shop and its invaluable cadre of volunteer craftsmen play an essential role in the future of the Aerospace Museum.

However, the restoration shop is not the only place the museum utilizes volunteers. Often, a volunteer is the first person you will encounter when you come to the museum for a visit. Volunteers run the information booth, the admission gates and serve as docent tour guides. The Education Department and the Library and Archives rely heavily on volunteer help to fulfill their roles within the museum's mission. The museum is profoundly grateful for the generous gift of time and skill given by its volunteers.
